EMERGENCY PLAN

Here's a list of things to do BEFORE an emergency happens. You never know when you and your horses might be affected by fire, flood, hurricanes or other disasters!

1. Have an escape plan. Discuss your plan and even do a 'drill' with your family, neighbors, and fellow stable boarders.

2. Post all of your phone numbers (veterinarian and friends with horse trailers included) in your barn area so that the police/firefighters will be able to contact you.

3. If you do not have a horse trailer, arrange with a friend (or two) to borrow their trailer in an emergency.

4. Make sure all of your horses will load. Practice this yourself periodically and show your neighbors or other friends how to load your horses in case you're not home at the time of the emergency.

5. Plan ahead to have a safe place to go. Find out if there's a county fairgrounds, a big barn in your area, or a friend's stable that you can take your horses and/or other animals.

6. Keep a halter handy for each animal with your address and phone numbers attached to it. Put it on your horse if you have to leave him in his field during an emergency. If he gets loose, the person finding him with have this vital information.

7. Be sure to have crates/boxes available for any other critters (cats, dogs, chickens, goats, etc.) that you may need to move.

No matter who says what, don't believe it if it doesn't make sense.
